Artist Statement
The Idea of comfort and the way in which we manifest it in our lives threads through my creative process to form work based on structure, stability, and a sense of calm.
Gestures of embrace and growth and connection, the rich softness of ancient fabrics and upholstered furniture, as well as, architectural elements and atmospheric space are all influences in my work. Leaves, both fresh and fallen, water worn rocks, blooms and branches are strong sources of inspiration with their blended color fields, waxy surfaces, rounded curves and directness of form. These interests are explored and applied to surface, color pallet, firing process, and form through literal, abstract, and emotional means.
Translating emotions and concepts of comfort into objects of use is accomplished through an innate approach to form and function. Focusing more on the simplicity and gesture of form than what the vessel may contain or serve keeps me actively connected to what the work is communicating. There is a relaxed and casual nature to the work with visual strength and reliability, allowing space for attention and reflection.
